What Is Audio Mixing?

Audio mixing (also called music mixing, song mixing or track mixing) is the process of taking every individual recorded element of a song — lead vocals, ad-libs, harmonies, drums, bass, melodies and effects — and blending them into one cohesive stereo track. A mixing engineer sets the level of each sound, places it in the stereo field, controls its dynamics, corrects its tone and adds space and effects so that every part can be heard clearly and the song hits with the intended energy.

Audio mixing happens after recording and before mastering. A great recording with no mix sounds flat and cluttered. A professionally mixed song sent to mastering comes back louder, more polished and ready for streaming platforms, radio and club systems. Mastering cannot fix a weak mix, which is why professional audio mixing matters more than most artists realize.

Our Audio Mixing Services in Las Vegas

Every audio mix from Studio1212 covers the full mixing chain, not just a vocal sitting on top of a beat. Our mixing services include:

Vocal mixing, tuning & editing

Pitch correction (transparent or stylized Auto-Tune), timing alignment, breath and noise cleanup, comping of the best takes.

Leveling & balance

Lead vocals, doubles, ad-libs, harmonies and instrumental elements mixed so nothing is buried and nothing is fighting.

EQ & tone shaping

Removing mud and harshness, carving space so the vocal and the beat sit together instead of on top of each other.

Compression & dynamics

Consistent vocal presence from the quiet verse to the loud hook, with punch preserved on drums and 808s.

Stereo mixing, imaging & panning

Width on doubles, harmonies and ad-libs, with a centered, focused lead vocal.

Reverb, delay & effects

Depth and atmosphere that fit the genre, from dry and in-your-face to lush and spacious.

Mix automation

Rides on vocal levels, effect throws, filter sweeps and transitions so the song moves and builds.

Low-end mixing

808s, kicks and bass mixed to translate on car systems, earbuds and club subs.

Reference mixing

Comparing your mix against commercial tracks in your genre so it competes at the same level.

You receive a high-resolution stereo mix ready for mastering, plus clean and explicit mixes, a performance/TV mix (instrumental with backing vocals) and an a cappella mix on request.

Hip-Hop, Rap, Pop & R&B Mixing in Las Vegas

Las Vegas has no shortage of recording studios. Far fewer have a mixing engineer who knows how to make a rap vocal cut through a dense trap beat without sounding thin, or how to mix an R&B hook smooth and wide without losing the lead. Hip-hop mixing and R&B mixing have their own rules: 808 and vocal low-end have to share space, ad-libs need to be placed and effected deliberately, and the vocal has to stay forward even on phone speakers. This is the music we record and mix every day, and it’s the reason artists who have had their songs mixed elsewhere bring their sessions to our Las Vegas mixing studio.

A Note From the Mixing Engineer: Send Trackouts, Not a Two-Track Beat

Most artists today record vocals over a pre-made instrumental bought or leased online. That beat is usually already mastered: loud, compressed and limited. Recording a vocal on top of it and then trying to mix the two together is like painting on a canvas that’s already been varnished. The vocal never fully “matches” the beat because the beat’s frequency balance can’t be adjusted anymore in the mix.

We can still mix a vocal convincingly on a two-track, and we do it often. But if you can get the trackouts (also called stems — the individual files for drums, 808, melody, etc.) from your producer, you give your mixing engineer full control over the entire song. That’s the difference between a good mix and a record that sounds like it belongs on the radio. Ask your producer for them before your mixing session — most include them with a premium or exclusive license.

How Our Audio Mixing Process Works

Record with us or send your files

Book a session and record your vocals at our Las Vegas studio so the mix starts from a clean, properly captured performance, or send us a session you recorded elsewhere for online mixing.

Tell us the direction

Bring 1–3 reference songs with the mix you’re going for, and tell us anything specific: Auto-Tune style, how wet you want the vocal, which ad-libs matter most.

We mix

Your mixing engineer tunes, edits, balances and processes the full session, checking the mix on studio monitors, headphones, car and phone speakers.

Review and mix revisions

You hear the mix and request changes until it sounds right. When you record and mix in the same session, you approve the mix before you leave.

Delivery

Final mixes are delivered in high-resolution format, ready for mastering, release or your live show.

What to Send Us for a Mix

  • All vocal tracks as separate files (lead, doubles, harmonies, ad-libs), exported from the start of the session
  • The instrumental trackouts/stems if available, or the two-track beat if not
  • Tempo (BPM) and key of the song
  • Your reference mixes and any notes
  • Files in WAV or AIFF, 24-bit, at the session’s original sample rate, with no effects or limiters on the master bus

If you’re not sure how to export your session for mixing, call us and we’ll walk you through it.

Audio Mixing FAQs

What’s the difference between audio mixing and mastering?

Audio mixing balances and processes the individual tracks of a song into one stereo file. Mastering is the final polish applied to that stereo mix: overall loudness, tonal consistency and preparation for streaming, CD or vinyl. Mixing shapes the song; mastering prepares it for release. At Studio1212 both mixing and mastering are included in your recording session.

How much does audio mixing cost in Las Vegas?

Professional audio mixing in Las Vegas typically runs from a modest per-song fee at home setups to several hundred dollars per song at full commercial mixing studios. At Studio1212, mixing and mastering are included in the $80 per hour studio rate, and the 3-hour Jordan Room package is $180. Mixing for songs recorded elsewhere is quoted individually.

How long does it take to mix a song?

When you record with us, your single is mixed during the same session and you approve the mix before you leave. Songs sent in for online mixing are scheduled on request, and rush mixing is available for release deadlines.

Can you mix vocals I recorded at home?

Yes. We regularly mix vocals recorded in home studios. The result depends on the quality of the recording: a clean vocal from a decent microphone in a treated space mixes beautifully. A noisy, clipped or heavily room-sounding vocal can be improved in the mix but not fully fixed. If in doubt, record the vocal here.

Do I need to send stems, or is the two-track beat enough for mixing?

We can mix on a two-track beat, and most of our clients start that way. Stems (trackouts) give the mixing engineer control over the drums, 808 and melody separately and produce a noticeably better mix. Ask your producer — stems are usually included with higher-tier licenses.

How many mix revisions are included?

We keep working until the mix sounds right to you, within the scope of the original song. When you mix in-session, revisions happen on the spot.

Do you do Auto-Tune in the mix?

Yes. We can apply transparent pitch correction that nobody hears, or the stylized hard-tune effect common in modern rap and pop mixes. Tell us which you want, or play us a reference.

Do you offer online audio mixing if I’m not in Las Vegas?

Yes. Send your files, we mix, you review and approve remotely. Request a mixing quote through the contact page and we’ll send you upload instructions.

What file formats do you deliver after mixing?

High-resolution WAV mixes (24-bit) plus MP3 reference copies. Clean, performance and a cappella mixes are available on request.

Do you mix genres other than hip-hop and R&B?

Our specialty and most of our daily mixing work is hip-hop, rap, pop and R&B, but we mix other styles as well. Send us a rough bounce and we’ll tell you honestly whether we’re the right mixing studio for it.

What are your mixing studio hours?

Studio1212 is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by appointment. Book online or call 702.491.9377.
